Signode, a global manufacturer and the Transit Packaging division of Crown Holdings, Inc., is passionate about Twentyby30™, our core sustainability program establishing ambitious goals to bring environmental, social and governance changes to be achieved by or before 2030. Five pillars of the program are set with goals for each aspect: Climate Action, Resource Efficiency, Optimum Circularity, Working together and Never Compromise.

Climate Action

As a global manufacturer, we have an important role to play to slow the pace of climate change. Our 2030 goals aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and change the ways we work to drive fuel efficiency and invest in renewable sources. 

Our operations teams have taken on the challenges inherent in our goals and have made impressive inroads to deliver results for Crown Holdings , Inc. and our stakeholders.

We have multiple projects to demonstrate how Signode is becoming a sustainable division of Crown. 

Goals

01 - Reduce Scope 1 GHG emissions, targeting a 50% combined reduction in absolute Scope 1 (fuel) and Scope 2 (electricity emissions).

02 - Reduce Scope 2 GHG emissions, targeting a 50% combined reduction in absolute Scope 1 (fuel) and Scope 2 (electricity emissions).

03 - Reduce absolute GHG emission from our supply chain (Scope 3) by 16%.

04 - Source 75% renewable electricity by 2030 in accordance with our Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) GHG goals, and 100% by 2040.



Resource Efficiency

Efficient in how we use resources with growing demands. We understand the importance of water and resources around the world and how they impact the health of humankind. 

Signode has focused on making it possible to reach our water conservation goals in areas of the world where these efforts are most needed and most appreciated.

Goals

06 - Reduce water usage in our operations by 20% by the end of 2025.

07 - Maintain a 100% track record of meeting local wastewater standards.

08 - Ensure all employees have continued access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene.

09 - By 2030, be replenishing 100% of water consumed from high scarcity watersheds back to those watersheds.



Optimum Circularity

We see the vital role in creating a circular economy to reduce waste and follow the closed loop system, which calls for the reduction, re-use and recycling of elements. 

Signode pushes the limit on recycled content in everything we do. We put recyclable materials back into new packaging, reducing our dependence on virgin materials while eliminating waste to landfill and carbon emissions during processing.

10 - Send zero waste from our operations to landfill.

13 - Maintain or improve the industry-wide average of recycled content in metal cans and transit packaging products in collaboration with suppliers, industry associations and other partners.

14 - Increase the recycled content of the plastic strapping we make by 10% globally.



Working Together

The importance of a diverse and inclusive workforce is critical to Signode's future successes. By fostering a diverse community, we can bring multiple experiences to create a resilient organisation with strong problem-solving skills.

15 - Reduce our Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) by 20% by 2025.

16 - Continuously encourage, inform and empower every employee to be an active participant in Crown’s Sustainability Program, creating meaningful connections between their daily tasks, their personal lives and the impact they can make in the environment and society.

17 - Evolve toward a more employee-centric organization where Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) awareness is embedded in the organizational culture, allowing our people to be authentic at work. Encourage our top management to be D&I role models as a source of inspiration for all.



Never Compromise

Focused on producing in an environment where product innovation and business projects are in line with our social, environmental and governmental aims. 

We perform continuous research and development to find eco-designs and improve our manufacturing footprint. Also to comply with global standards in manufacturing without compromising the wellbeing of consumers, employees and the environment. 

Goals

18 - Decrease the lifecycle footprint of our products and processes through eco-design and manufacturing innovation. Crown commits to devoting at least 50% of its Research & Development (R&D) technology developments toward minimizing the footprint of its products and manufacturing processes.

19 - By 2022, all operations meet a new consolidated "One Crown Standard." This new standard will unify existing standards of migration, toxicology and safety utilized in our various geographical locations. By 2025, Crown will have screened all food contact materials for the presence of Chemicals of Concern (COC) and will take action to eliminate them where deemed necessary.

20 - By 2025, all suppliers determined as high risk are assessed by third-party verification assessments. By 2030, 100% of Crown’s core raw materials and service suppliers, by spend, are assessed and comply with Crown Responsible and Ethical Sourcing policies and requirements, with an interim target of achieving 75% by 2025.
